Description
This hand-beaded lighter by Chey Kahgegab (Saginaw Ojibwe) is a vibrant example of Ojibwe craftsmanship blended with everyday utility. A small Bic lighter is wrapped in soft deerhide leather, overlaid with a meticulously crafted peyote stitch design using 11/0 Delica beads. The beadwork showcases both cultural artistry and careful attention to detail.
Once the lighter runs out, the beadwork can be moved to a new lighter. To do this:
1. Gently remove the beaded covering.
2. Slide off the deerhide wrapping.
3. Place the leather wrapping on a new small Bic lighter.
4. Carefully slide the beadwork back into place over the leather.
A functional object transformed into a piece of living art, this beaded lighter is a testament to the enduring beauty and adaptability of Ojibwe artistry.
